Maybe your fingers were a little greasy from that taco you just ate for lunch, and your fingers slipped and somehow sent your email in GMail. I’ve done this, and you usually hear a “Nooooo!” down the hall when it happens.

In the labs area of GMail (under settings), there is a new feature you can enable called “Undo Send”. In a nutshell, you can recall an email from being sent as long as you left-click on the undo link after accidentally sending an email. I hear you’ll get about 5 seconds to recall your email before the opportunity is gone.

This is the description provided in the labs area:

Oops, hit “Send” too soon? Stop messages from being sent for a few seconds after hitting the send button. – By Yuzo F

Give it a shot and drop a comment on what you think.

Not anymore! The crew over at Mashable just stumbled on the feature that will allow you to upload multiple documents by simply CTRL-selecting each document. You even get a progress indicator that shows you each file’s upload status.

See a demonstration screenshot after the break.

I haven’t gotten it to work on Firefox, but it is working on the latest Safari browser so I’d give it a day or so to make it’s way across all browsers. You’ll also want to clear your browser cache, and try logging out and back in if you can’t get it to work correctly.

Note: I did not have to enable this feature in settings > labs.

When you first get into real estate, one of the first things you’ll do is get your company email address and begin to send and receive email between your family, friends, and new contacts; informing them of your start into a lucrative real estate career.

The email service you end up choosing to manage your email is one decision that seems small up front, but think about the long term consequences. If you choose an email service you end up hating, you’ll then have to endure the tedious process of transferring all your email (literally forwarding them all) to your new service.

Why not just start with the best? GMail, in my opinion, is the best email service out there hands down; and I’m not the only one of thinks that. Don Reisinger over at CNet recently wrote an article on why he thinks GMail is the best email service out there.

Here’s his five main points:

Spam
Initially, you probably won’t get spam, but over time the amount of spam you can accumulate can get tremendous. Thankfully, GMail does a great job of filtering most of that spam.

Google Apps
When someone sends you an attachment in Word, Powerpoint, or even a PDF – you no longer have to even download it! You can view it right in your browser using Google Apps.

Filters
Filters in GMail are like rules for Outlook, only 100x better. Filters are super easy to create, and can help you organize your email in a snap.

Advertisements
I’m with Don on this one too. If you’ve used any other email service out there (Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc.), then you’ve seen the huge ads that can appear and totally ruin the experience. In GMail, the ads are minimal and are never images. Text ads are organized in areas that aren’t obtrusive to you, which is wonderful.

Conversations
When I first started using GMail, the conversations were pretty neat. Now, I feel I can’t live without them. Any email that has the same subject can form a conversation, which then enables you to see the history of an email at a glance. I know I’m not the only one that hates scrolling through tons of email history using the old method.

So there you have it! Why haven’t you given GMail a shot?

One of their next projects was a Todo List for Gmail, and it looks like they’ve begun rolling it out.

It’s simple – type in the name of the item that you’d like to do and it get’s published. Left-click on the select box next to that task and the object get’s completed.

If you have a GMail account, you’ll need to click on the labs icon on the top right of your GMail window to enable this for your account. Take a look, and read up on this new tool over at the official GMail Blog.

When I first started to use Gmail as my main email provider, I was saddened to learn that I could not put my signature below every email I sent out. My email signature is used to provide my contact information to recipients, and also as a constant reminder for referrals. Having my email at the bottom of all messages was not the way I wanted my emails structured, so I migrated over to using Outlook. Greasemonkey has brought me back to using Gmail.

What is Greasemonkey?

Greasemonkey is a Firefox Add-on that according to Aaron Boodman (the creator):

Allows you to customize the way a webpage displays using small bits of JavaScript.

Hundreds of scripts, for a wide variety of popular sites, are already available at http://userscripts.org.

You can write your own scripts, too. Mark Pilgrim’s definitive Greasemonkey guide, diveintogreasemonkey.org will show you how.

In lamens terms, Greasemonkey allows you to customize a page via Firefox, a web browser, beyond what the site has capabilities for at that moment. You can customize the way a web site performs under your Firefox browser to the way YOU want it to work without hindering the functionality of the site.

What does this have to do with Gmail? After installing Greasemonkey, you can install scripts that will customize the features of Gmail and make your life much easier. These customizations vary from new skins for a new visual appearance, changing the way labels appear, to even moving your signature to the bottom of every email. That last script was the one I was looking for.

Scripts That I Use

I’ve customized Gmail to work the way I want it, and would like to share with you the scripts that I use when using my Gmail account.

To install the scripts, you must first be using the Firefox web browser from Mozilla. Then you must install the Greasemonkey Add-On (successful installation can be seen when you see a little monkey in the lower right and corner of Firefox). When visiting the pages for the following scripts, each as a “install script” button in the upper right hand corner of the page. Simply click on this and each script will give you a prompt to be installed. Finally, visit your Gmail account to see changes. Links that will direct you to where to download Firefox and Greasemonkey are at the bottom of this article.

Gmail Air Skin: This nifty script allows you to visually change Gmail to be a bit more simplistic and appealing. It’s not really necessary, but I personally favor the new look.

Gmail Signature Float: This script allows you to move your signature at the bottom of your message instead of the bottom of every email. It allows allows you to exclude the “–” that automatically goes above each signature to signify the end of your post. I typically like to say, “Thank you,” or “Your help is appreciated,” here, so I decided to use this script as well. Thanks goes out to Tim Jarrett for taking the time to create this script!

Gmail Spam Count Hide: This script excludes the spam count from the “Spam” tab. I use this script because I don’t really care to see how much spam I’ve caught (it is Spam afterall), and it’ll be deleted after 30 days anyways so why bother?

I am always in search of new scripts that can help improve my experience with Gmail. If you use a script not mentioned here, be sure to drop it in your comment and I will definitely try it out.

You can download Firefox here and the Greasemonkey Add-on here.

I’m surprised when touring many new, experienced, and veteran real estate agent offices just how rudimentary and out-dated their email systems are. I think it’s necessary to shed a little light on just how nice Gmail is for real estate agents, and how using it can improve your day-to-day business.

First off, let me explain that just because your email may be johndoe@kw.com doesn’t mean that by using gmail you lose your email address. Gmail is advanced in the aspect that you can send emails from any account that you can verify ownership of using gmail’s software backend. What does this mean? You can log in to gmail and send emails as if they were coming from johndoe@kw.com.

As a real estate agent, I can attest to one FANTASTIC feature of gmail. Searching for lost emails is by far the easiest I’ve ever experienced. I don’t know why other email providers haven’t gotten it right just yet, but gmail sure has. Simply enter in a search and gmail will find emails using your search phrase in a split second. Can’t find that email from the title company you sent last week but you remember the topic in the email? Easy; enter the topic in the search field of gmail and voila! Out populates emails that use that phrase somewhere in the email.

If you have some spare time in your busy real estate schedules, take some time and familiarize yourself with what gmail can do for your stress levels. Head over to gmail.com and create a new account and play around with it a bit. I can almost guarantee that you’ll love it.

By the way, how does 2+ Gigabytes of storage sound? This is another gmail feature, and it’s growing every day.
