Tracking Your Mileage

Posted by Steve Castaneda in Online Tools Add comments

Keeping track of my mileage has always been a chore. I’ve tried them all; clipboards, spreadsheets, even the good old pen and paper. Regardless of the method I use to track, the habit of jotting down my mileage each day is one that I just haven’t grown into.

As an agent running a small business, it’s best practice to track my mileage; especially for tax deductions come tax season. I did a quick search on Google for an online mileage tracker, but I didn’t seem to find one that was suitable or easy to use. I don’t really want an extra piece of software on my computer, so I’ll rule that option out.

I want something web 2.0. I’m thinking an Ajax filled, intuitively simple, and filled with as little hurdles as possible. I’ll keep searching for a nice one to review soon, but in the meantime:

What do you use to track your mileage?

There are a couple of nifty tools to use along side your mileage tracker when we finally figure out which one is the best one for real estate agents.

At GasPriceWatch.com, you can get the latest gas prices from gas stations in your area. This information is driven by consumer input, so you might not always have the most accurate information. Something is better than nothing in my opinion.

FuelfrogIf you’re looking for an nifty way to track your gas mileage, the folks over at jkontherun hinted me over to Fuelfrog.

These is the kinds of applications I like! Easy to register and login, easy to manage, and aimed to be as simple as possible. At Fuelfrog, you can enter you fill-up dates and odometer readings to track and trend your gas mileage.

This should come in handy should gas prices continue to rise. How much is that shiny new SUV actually costing you, and what kind of mileage is it getting? Keep up with Fuelfrog and you’ll know!

Dude, first let me say this is am awesome looking blog. I love it. (the theme & use of pics)

But as far as the logging miles. I keep trying. I have the book sitting right there in the drivers side door panel, but just don’t do it.

I will make an effort to do this… I log a lot of mile and need to do this.

thanks for the great blog and post.

Thanks, Dallas! Comments like yours encourage me to keep writing. :)

It’s tough to keep track though, isn’t it? I was hoping to maybe hire a programmer to create a nice simple application for me using Ajax and all (web 2.0 ish), then beta it to my readers and network.

Hey Steve, I saw a GPS mileage device at a Realtor convention a few years back. You could flip a switch in the car, like turning on the meter in a taxi, and it would record your business mileage with locations and times. Pretty neat idea I thought. It should make for a bulletproof mileage log come tax time.

    Jim,
That’s a novel idea! Can you think of who made the GPS product? I’d like to do some research, and possibly get a test model to review for TechForAgents.com.

I thought it was a great idea too, and I wished I had thought of it!! I can’t remember the company name and I can’t find them on google. Either the company didn’t make it or they have a lousy internet presence. :)

=) Keeping track your milage compared to other cars too is good. It helps you to benchmark since with the rising petrol cost. It’s nice to know that your driving habits aren’t making you burn more fuel

Tracking of mileage is pretty good.
Since it allows you to know the rising of petrol cost :D
Makes you think twice, when spending an extra litre of petrol :)
