iPhone 3G for $199

Posted by Steve Castaneda in Cell Phones, News Add comments

It’s official!  The iphone 3G has had a substantial price reduction.  From $399 down to $199 (8gb version), I think they just made a fantastic move in the mobile market.

This is news straight from WWDC 2008, where Steve Jobs and his staff were giving a keynote about the latest and greatest regarding the iPhone.  This was a long-predicated rumor, and now it’s been made official from the man himself.

iPhone 3G is slated for a release on July 11th, so if you’re thinking about getting one be sure to be prepared!  What’s new?

  • Integrated GPS
  • Push Email (always-on; like using exchange)
  • 3G of course!  36% faster than N95 and Treo 750
  • Longer Battery Life
  • Sleek and Simplified Design (It’s gorgeous!)

Smart on Apples part. I think I’m going for an IPhone in the near future.

Any word of other carriers options then AT&T? They have really bad service in my area.

That phone’s not available in my country, I’m from Asia though we have some hacked iphones here XD

    Hey Ken,
The agreement is still between ATT and Apple, and it looks like they’re tightening up their activation procedures quite a bit too.

No doubt you’ll eventually find unlocked ones to use with any carrier, and this version comes with a tool to remove your SIM card. It probably is just a matter of time.

I hadn’t heard anything about them opening up to other carriers so figured it wasn’t happening yet. AT&T is just about the worst service you can get in my area so they are not an option, will just have to wait until Apple wakes up and realizes the whole world isn’t willing to switch to AT&T. Seems like a really bad business decision to only have one phone company offer you phone.

  6. Steve Castaneda Says:

I can definitely understand that. I particularly don’t like to be pigeon-holed either into a particular carrier.

Fortunately, ATT’s Houston service is dependable (from what I hear), and the contracts on my personal phone is over. I’ll give it a shot and report back on what I think.

I particular like the ability to develop applications for the iPhone. There’s already some MLS browsing applications available for various markets, but could you imagine PITI and Net Sheet Calculators built into your phone?

  7. Ken Smith in Chicago Says:

Didn’t realize you could add apps like that. Only done minor research as it does require AT&T and they really aren’t an option. Played with a few of them at poker tables as people that have them are always willing to show off their cool toy (which is all it is for many people).

To have access to the calculators I use on my main computer at all times would be very useful.

The MLS would be even better. Had MLS access on my phone about 4 years ago and it was great in a pinch, but the connection was painfully slow and the browser wasn’t very easy to use. Picture 4 year old technology for mobile browsing. Would love to have the same access again with todays technology.

I’ve seen some MLS searching applications already developed for various markets, but that’s just it; it’s market-centric.

I agree with you. Having MLS access one your mobile phone would be tremendous, especially on showing tours.

Great price on the iPhone! Any word yet if it will work as a Supra eKey?

  10. Steve Castaneda Says:

Hey Jim! That functionality is still probably lacking, even though this is one of the main reasons I see agents migrating from a traditional cell phone to a smart phone.

Sure wish it did though! I’ll do some research.

  11. Ken Smith in Chicago Says:

Steve I don’t think that you will even see anything beyond market-centric with MLS applications. Each market has it’s own issues that a single platform could never take into account.

Wonder why providers like ConnectMLS or ReXplorer don’t offer a solution for the iPhone. These providers serve multiple MLS’s and already are able to handle the data that the MLS’s provide. Seems like a smart business decision to me.

That stinks about AT&T. I just lost one of my phones so now would be the perfect time to get an Iphone. But I still have awhile on another contract. I have no idea why they limited themselves to one carrier.

I’d buy an iPhone TOMORROW if it were available thru Verizon. I can’t afford to split our family plan between two carriers. But I sure would love to own one of those stinkin’ things.
