Conficker Worm Attack on April Fools? 4

I’ve been getting a round of emails notifying me of a new virus on PCs said to make waves comes 4/1 (April Fools).  It could be some big joke, but what if it isn’t?  I did some research in case you want to ensure you’re safe against any April Fool’s viruses.

A quick way to determine if you’re computer is affected by the virus at this time according to US Today (make sure you’re connected to the internet) is to:

  1. Try clicking to Microsoft.com.
  2. Next try Symantec.com.
  3. Now try McAfee.com.
  4. Can you get to them all?  You’re likely to be just fine.

That’s because Conficker blocks you from reaching any web address that includes Microsoft, Symantec, McAfee, AVG, Kaspersky, Trend Micro, F-Secure, Panda, Sophos, SecureWorks or Sunbelt in the URL.

Please make sure you are connected to the internet before trying this test.

Some extra steps for precaution:

  1. Always make sure you have anti-virus installed on your computer.  I recommend a company called NOD32.
  2. Always make sure you are installing your updates from Microsoft.  If you look on the bottom right hand side of your task bar (near the time), look for a yellow shield icon.  See one?  That means you are not installing your updates from the makers of Windows.  It’s strongly advised that you always keep your computer updated.  Always!
  3. You may also want to setup automatic updates with Windows.

  1. Keeping your computer updated with Microsoft patches is big step in helping fight off viruses. For Kido, make sure you have the following Microsoft patches installed: MS08-067, MS08-068 and MS09-001. You Google each of these to download, or use Windows Update,

  2. Russ says:

So far so good here.. I have all the patches installed.

  3. Thanks for the post

  4. I think it’s a hoax.
