Apartments.com Adds Mobile Support

Browsing listings on your mobile devices is pretty neat.  Find the site that’s optimized for a mobile device (such as a cell phone), and your experience is optimized so that it’s easy to use given the implications (small screen, no mouse, etc.).

It good to hear that Apartments.com is taking steps to improve their site by optimizing Apartments.com to be mobile-friendly.

“In the mobile search environment, access to information is key,” said Chris Brown, vice president of product management, Apartments.com. “After taking into consideration multiple operating systems, mobile devices and carriers, Apartments.com has created a user-friendly experience for renters on the mobile web, delivering apartment listings, photos and detailed information through a rich data format conveniently accessible from any web-enabled mobile phone and carrier.”

The online market for renters is growing without a doubt, and this particular quote shows just how much.

Today almost 40 million people browse the Mobile Web, which is projected to grow 19 percent annually and reach more than 90 million by 2012.

19 percent growth?!  Come to think of it, with the releases of next generation phones such as the TMobile G1, Blackberry Storm, and iPhone, these numbers don’t seem unrealistic.

1.5 Million people have already pre-ordered the G1 without even touching it.  I’d agree - the web is totally going mobile.

That is good that they are trying to make their site more useful, but in my area to do that they need to get more of the apartments available listed. Many of the property management companies are not using them so a search does not produce many results.

Wait a few years and the US will be like Japan with the mobile phone internet market, but until then those companies that leverage the mobile market to their advantage will be reaping a lot of benefits from their competitors.

its one thing to have your display correctly on a mobile, quite another to make it usable, anyone care to estimate the number of different mobiles outhere, even the number of moels that make for 80% of the phones used. Then add network coverage issues etc.. Not easy for sure.
