Note: Live update currently over at Engadget from this annoucement event. I also just found TMobile’s live stream.
Have you ever heard of android? No; I’m not talking about Hal from Space Odyssey. Android is actually a platform for mobile devices (phones). It’s “what you see” when you turn on your phone; the nuts and bolts (operating system).
Want to hear the best news? Android is a Google product. If you’ve been a reader of my blog, you might have picked up that I’m a Google advocate. I use their GMail, Analytics software, Chrome and even their reader on a daily basis.
You would bet that I’d be ecstatic to hear that Google was making an operating system for a mobile phone, and even better, letting it be open source of any carrier to adopt for a new handset.

Google Android's "Mascot"
Engadget is currently there at the event and I’ll be following it throughout the day. Feel free to check here or directly at Engadget to get the latest information about this release from Google and TMobile.
Update: The guys at Engadget just got their hands on an actual production model from TMobile.
Update: 10:45AM (central) - A couple of videos have been released worth viewing. See below!

I like their mascot that they have. Google sure has made a lot of changes in the last 10 years. They will be making some big advances here in the future with mobile. Mobile internet access is going to be the norm real soon.

I love my iPhone but after viewing this video the G1 is looking tempting. Their biggest down fall, Tmobile. But I hear that Tmobile will be selling unlocked versions… anyone else heard news on this?

It looks so tempting.. but T-mobile? Aghh!! I switched from T-mobile last year because I couldn’t get a signal in my own office! I’ll have to wait for unlocked versions and see what they run. Are you getting one Steve?

It’s very tempting! I know that the plans are affordable and I’m not currently in a contract (currently with Verizon Wireless), so I may get one just to test it out.
They haven’t really opened it up to non-TMobile customers however.
I like platform - not necessarily the handset. I’m surprised HTC didn’t snaz it up like they do with all their other handsets.
It may be wise to wait for another handset to be released (more makers have announced that they are making Android handsets as well, but not until next year), but it’s hard to be patient that long!

So I can’t use it with my Blackberry - I will need to upgrade to a new phone to get this to work with T Mobile?

That’s correct, Sam. You’ll need a handset that comes WITH Android as the operating system. The only announced one so far is the TMobile G1.

Oh.. I also have Blackberry; this means its not platform independent.

i was hoping that the google phone would be free (like i heard it would be free from the advertising) so i may have to wait a little while before i get me one
