Google Announces Google Chrome Operating System

You have a few choices when it comes to your operating system that comes with that shiny new computer of yours.  If you bought a PC, you’ll be running Microsoft Windows.  Macs enjoy the OSX platform, and a few computers here and there run with versions of Linux.

New to the field is an operating system begin pioneering by the geniuses at Google, called the Google Chrome OS.  You may know about Google Chrome; it’s their browser set to compete with the likes if Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari.

Google Chrome OS is aimed for those who spend a majority of their time online (don’t we all?).  Here’s a quote from their blog post that goes into more detail:

Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems.

We can assume a couple things from this quote:

  • There could be a possibility of an instant-on operating system.  No more booting wait times.
  • While the Android operating system is meant for mobile phones and netbooks, it looks like Google Chrome OS will be more for desktops and laptops.

I can definitely appreciate the fact that this OS will be open source.  Should we assume free?  If you look at the history of all the other Google products, I think that can be a safe assumption.  I’m sure the general public can appreciate a free operating system.

Since this is being built by Google, I’m expecting to see Adsense play a role in this.  Will it be built into the operating system itself?  Will the cost to deploy it to the world be subsidized by advertisements built into the operating system?

You won’t be hearing much about it this year, but it’s set to make it’s lovely debut in 2010.  I definitely expect to see versions of the OS hitting the open source community so you may catch wind of how it works much sooner than that.

I dont think Microsoft has anything to worry about yet, but I am excited at the possibilities and what the developers can do with this. Sounds very interesting.

I have heard just a little about this operating system. We have new computers with Vista, but I would love something better. Wait and see …
